Sample Holder

True modularity, precision and user-friendliness

The Stream Infinity Sample Holder is a crucial component of the Stream Infinity system, responsible for delivering controlled heating and biasing signals to your sample. Importantly, it also channels liquid from the Liquid Supply System to the sealed Nano-Cell within the TEM vacuum column. Fabricated with the highest precision and top-quality materials, it fits your microscope goniometer perfectly and ensures optimal mechanical stability. Moreover, its modular design allows for easy cleaning and replacement of each vacuum component, ensuring contamination-free experiments and future-proof upgradability.

Stream Infinity Sample Holder

Discover its many innovative features.

Improved tilt

Better structure characterization

A few improvements have been included in our new-generation environmental Stream Infinity holder. Particularly, the tip of the holder has been redesigned to expand the alpha tilt range of the sample. This provides greater flexibility in orienting the sample towards particular crystallographic planes or directions and maximizes the X-ray collection efficiency. This reduces the time needed for EDS scans for side-entry detectors. The increased X-ray collection angle of the new tip and the ability to flip the tip together further enhance the EDS performance.

Modular & universal design

Clean, complementary & cross-platform experiments

The Stream Infinity Sample Holder’s modular design allows for easy removal of the tip, tubing and manual valves, facilitating on-site cleaning or component replacement. This helps to maintain a clean and contamination-free environment – critical for reliable experimental results. The holder tip has a universal design that fits both JEOL and Thermo Fisher Scientific (TFS) TEMs, which have different, complementary functionalities. Additionally, the assembled tip, containing a Nano-Cell and comprising electrical contacts, represents a cartridge with a sample. This cartridge can be used for cross-platform characterization for SEM or beamline setups to collect complementary results.

True flexibility

Easily shift between STEM and TEM mode

The Stream Infinity holder features a new electrical contact method and flexible tubing that can be moved together with the tip. As a result, the new tip can be flipped along the holder axis by 180 degrees, changing the position of the sample from the top (default) to the bottom, while keeping the focus point virtually the same and maintaining electrical contact with the chip. This grants you the freedom to flawlessly switch between STEM or TEM mode while maintaining the microscope’s optimal resolution performance. Importantly, you can switch between both imaging modes within a matter of seconds and without the need to disassemble the tip.

Unique upgradability

Perform liquid and gas experiments with the same holder

The new Stream Infinity holder is a versatile solution for in situ liquid and gas experiments. Compatible with Nano-Chips for both research types, it supports various tubing and O-ring options which can be chosen based on the experiment type. Simply select the appropriate configuration of the chips and connect the required Liquid Supply System (LSS) or Gas Supply System (GSS). As a universal holder, it can be upgraded from a liquid to a gas option, or vice versa. Aside from the dedicated chips and supply system, the upgrade includes a specific holder set with a dedicated tip, tubing, and O-rings to prevent cross-contamination between liquid and gas experiments.

Nano-Cell

The smallest known chemical reactor

Based on advanced MEMS technology, the Nano-Cell is a functional sample carrier that enables a controlled and clean reactive environment for imaging chemical reactions at the nano-scale. Integrated into the Nano-Cell is the 4-contact micro-heater and micro-sensor for locally controlling the temperature environment from RT to 1,000 °C. The Nano-Cell also contains 4 biasing contacts. Together, the eight electrodes enable combined heating and biasing experiments. Replicating a real-world industrial chemical reactor, the Nano-Reactor enables sub-Angstrom resolution imaging and analysis of liquid reactions.

Modular Sample Holder

Removable tip & tubing for clean experiments

A clean environment is essential for in situ microscopy experiments. The modularity of the Stream Infinity Sample Holder allows for all components that come into contact with the liquid sample to be replaced or cleaned on-site by the user. This includes the liquid tubing, metal tip & lid, O-rings and consumable Nano-Cell.

Liquid Supply System

Gain precise fluidic control

The Liquid Supply System (LSS) is an integrated solution designed to offer you ease-of-use, flexibility and reproducibility in your in situ liquid experiments. With the LSS, you can fully control the microfluidic environment inside the Nano-Cell while heating and/or biasing your sample.
