Reseearchers characterise how flufenamic acid, a COX inhibitor, which is used in multiple industries, forms crystals from a liquid solution. The earliest stages of crystal growth are key to determining the final structure of a crystal, and scientists have visualised this process for the first time.

Researchers have performed high resolution imaging of Ferritin proteins in liquid using a DENSsolutions Ocean In situ liquid system and a Gatan K2-IS. We are looking at objects as small as 10 nm imaged at a resolution close to 1 nm. These preliminary results highlight once more the importance of Liquid Phase Electron Microscopy (LP EM) and the need for a stable and reliable liquid cell solution

In Situ self-assembly membrane formation

For the first time, researchers have made a comprehensive video of liquid membrane formation using a transmission electron microscope (TEM). They used soap-like nanodroplets submerged in water to create the membrane. Their results are published in Nature, Chemistry and have been highlighted in the Nature, Chemistry News & Views article ‘The molecular Lego movie’.

Modular Sample Holder

The Ocean Sample Holder introduces the Nano-Cell and liquid environment to the TEM. After assembling the Sample Holder, it is tested in the vacuum test station and ready for inserting into the microscope. The Ocean was developed in conjunction with leaders in liquid in situ TEM and provides users clean reliable results.

100 Nano-Cells

The Ocean Series consists of a dual chip Nano-Cell that sandwiches two chips together to form a microfluidic compartment. Samples can be loaded or grown directly on the chip in the field of view, removing the need to flow the sample into the cell or drying, fixing and freezing.

Syringe pump

Included in the Ocean system is a Syringe Pump for controlling the liquid flow to the Nano-Cell. The easy-to-use Syringe pump can be set to automatically infuse the small amount of liquid at a maximum flow rate of 10 μL/min and minimum flow rate of 25 nL/min.

Vacuum test pump

To ensure the integrity of the TEM is maintained, included in the Ocean system is a Vacuum Test Pump which is to be used following assembly of the Sample Holder. This tests the integrity of the Nano-Cell and checks the assembly has been performed correctly by the user.

Workflow

In this video you can see the complete Ocean system workflow, from sample preparation to research results. It shows the user friendliness of the system in terms of chip loading/unloading and tip rotation for improved STEM imaging.

This protocol was developed by one of our earliest customers, INM-Leibniz Institute for New Materials. At this institute, Prof. Niels de Jonge and his group made a significant contribution to the LPEM field with their research into the relationship between liquid thickness and spatial resolution.
